PACE calls for lifting sanctions against YU
STRASBOURG, April 3 (Itar-Tass) - The chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Lord David Russell-Johnston, called on Western countries to lift sanctions against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
The sanctions have not operated as it is planned and there are many arguments to restrict them, Russell-Johnston told a press conference on Monday.
One of them is the sufferings of Yugoslavia's population. Nobody should forget the difficult situation of Yugoslavs, he said.
That is why the PACE is calling for softening sanctions against Yugoslavia imposed by the European Union, he noted.
Russell-Johnston stressed the need to continue this process because the sanctions prove its ineffectiveness.
