Anti-Albright demonstration in front of US embassy

MOSCOW, Jan 31, 2000 -- (AFP) A group of some 150 demonstrators protesting a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright gathered in front of the U.S. embassy in Moscow Sunday, the Interfax news agency reported, quoting police.

The group, made up of members from nationalist political parties and religious organizations, expressed fears that Albright, who was due to arrive early Monday for two days of talks on the Middle East peace process, would try to persuade Moscow to pull its troops out of Chechnya.

"Madeleine Albright hypocritically speaks about human rights violations in Chechnya while she hides the real aim of her visit: to save the Chechen bandits from an upcoming defeat," one of the organizers, Leonid Petrovski, told the demonstration.
