Macedonian soldier seriously injured in explosion of mine
SKOPJE, Sep 19, 2000 -- (AFP) One Macedonian soldier was seriously injured near the Blace border crossing with Kosovo when an army jeep hit an anti-tank mine, an interior ministry spokesman said Monday.
The mine, which wounded three other soldiers on Sunday during a routine patrol, was planted by groups of smugglers from Kosovo, a UN-administered Yugoslav province, ministry spokesman Georgi Trendafilov claimed during a press conference.
The spokesman added that soldiers would be on increased combat alert across the country.
Last week, there were several other incidents on the border, with sporadic shootings between Macedonian border guards and Kosovars trying to illegally enter Macedonia.
