Senior politician killed in Kosovo

PRISTINA, Jun 17, 2000 -- (AFP) A senior member of the moderate Kosovo Democratic League (LDK) was assassinated in his home in Nabrdje, western Kosovo, a United Nations spokeswoman said Friday.

Two masked men wearing badges of the disbanded guerrilla group, the Kosovo Liberation Army (UCK), shot Alil Dreshaj early Thursday after breaking into his house, said Susan Manuel, spokeswoman for the UN mission in Kosovo (UNMIK).

The assailants "made no demand for money" and fled immediately after the attack, according to a spokesman for the UN police force in nearby Pec.

In a similar attack last week, three unidentified assailants killed one man and wounded another in their home in Pec, the spokesman added.

International observers fear an upsurge of violence in the area with the approach of municipal elections, due to be held next autumn.

The LDK is lead by Ibrahim Rugova, a moderate ethnic-Albanian leader who nevertheless warned in February that Kosovo could find itself again at war if it is not granted independence from Yugoslavia.
