Joseph Limprecht, the U.S. Ambassador to Albania, said Albanian politicians should try to reach a compromise on local polls based on their constitution rather than making personal attacks against international institutions.

Interior Minister Spartak Poci and Central Bank governor Shkelqim Cani are under investigation for the disappearance of gold coins worth $2.8 million from the Albanian treasury. Four ex-ministers and one ex-governor are also being investigated.

Ruling Socialist Party lawmakers will set up a commission to track down the stolen gold before local polls due in October.

Italy's ENEL won a contract to manage Albania's debt-ridden electricity company KESH.


Prime Minister Ilir Meta has cancelled a visit to the northern town of Tropoje after the local branch of the opposition Democratic Party had said it was opposed to Meta's visit.

Metal Research Group, an American company planning to invest $75 million in the Albanian copper industry, will take over plants and mines this week under a concession contract.
