After many opposition rallies all over the country, the ruling Socialists have decided to organize one in the southern city of Berat, marking the beginning of their campaign for the October local elections.

The opposition Democratic Party said it would not boycott the local elections but objects to the central election commission and aims to change it.

The government wants the port city of Durres to become a duty-free zone.


Representatives of the business community asked the Minister for Economic Cooperation and Trade Ermelinda Meksi to include them in consultations on laws relating to the economy.

Interior Minister Spartak Poci and his Turkish counterpart Sadettin Tantan discussed ways of boosting cooperation in fighting crime.


Finance Minister Anastas Angjeli leaves for Washington for the spring meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
