Alert for US citizens in Kosovo on bombing anniversary

BELGRADE, Mar 21, 2000 -- (Reuters) The US State Department's office in Kosovo issued an alert Tuesday to all US citizens in the Yugoslav province ahead of the first anniversary of NATO's bombing campaign against Belgrade.

"American citizens are advised to exercise appropriate caution when travelling in Kosovo and avoid areas where demonstrations and large crowds may gather," the US office in Pristina warned in a statement.

"It is possible that nationalist sympathisers or provocateurs may use this anniversary as a pretext for other types of violence," it added.

It advised in particular against travel to the Serbian area of Kosovska Mitrovica in the north, scene of violent clashes in recent weeks including the stoning of US troops conducting weapons searches.

The office asked all US citizens here to register with it before Friday, the first anniversary of the US-led air strikes aimed at ending Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic's widespread oppression of Kosovo's ethnic Albanian majority.
