Albanian police come down hard on smuggled condoms
TIRANA, Mar 17, 2000 -- (Radio Prague) Police in southern Albania made a record haul of five million contraband condoms from Greece with a street value of $700,000, a daily reported on Friday.
The truck driver told police his cargo was exempt from customs duty as they were a gift from humanitarian groups to encourage safe sex among the impoverished Balkan nation's 3.3 million people, the Gazeta Shqiptare said.
The condoms are being guarded by police while authorities decide what to do with them.
Albania is trying to crack down on smuggling - especially of fuel, cigarettes and coffee - since customs duties account for some 60 percent of budget revenues.
