Italy pulls out of Nato exercise in Kosovo

BRUSSELS, Mar 15, 2000 -- (Reuters) Italy has pulled out of a planned NATO military exercise due to take place in Kosovo from March 19 to April 10, a spokesman for the alliance's peace-keeping force in the province said Tuesday.

The spokesman refused to give a reason for the decision, though an Italian diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Italy preferred to commit the 400 troops slated for the manoeuvre to peace-keeping work with the KFOR force in Kosovo.

An estimated 2,000 troops from six countries -- the Unites States, Italy, Argentina, Netherlands, Poland and Romania -- were expected to take part in the "Dynamic Response 2000" exercise.
