Masked gunmen kill Albanian policeman, army officer

GJIROKASTER, Albania, Mar 8, 2000 -- (Reuters) Masked gunmen shot dead an Albanian policeman and an army officer on Tuesday in the first flare-up of lawlessness in over a year, the police said.

Four men stopped the car of the two uniformed men and sprayed them with bullets after they refused to hand over their weapons, police chief Edmond Cela told Reuters.

Hold-ups were a regular occurrence in the poor Balkan nation after it plunged into anarchy in 1997. The government cracked down on crime and imprisoned some 40 gangs last year.
