Hungarian government popular -- with car thieves

BUDAPEST, Mar 7, 2000 -- (AFP) Thieves have stolen 21 top-of-the-line Audi or Volkwagen cars used by Hungarian government officials since the 1998 elections, and only four have been recovered, police admitted Monday.

On Friday cabinet spokesman Gabor Borokai's vehicle was stolen, police said.

There was still no trace of it Monday even though the car was equipped with a tracking device linked to police, customs authorities and the civil guard, Pal Horvath of the prime minister's economy department told MTI news agency.
