Croatian television director offers resignation
ZAGREB, Jan 11, 2000 -- (AFP) The director of Croatia's state-owned national radio and television network HRT, Ivan Vrkic, offered his resignation to the new parliament on Monday, the HINA news agency said.
Vrkic, who is also president of the HRT management board, said he was quitting because the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), which, as the dominant force in the previous parliament, had lost its majority in the January 3 legislative elections.
The transformation of the HRT into a non-political public service has been high on the agenda of commitments that Croatia has to fulfill to be considered a real European democracy.
The center-left opposition, which inflicted a crushing defeat to the HDZ in the elections, had repeatedly promised that it would tackle the HRT issue if it won.
