Hospital fakes Millennium baby birth announcement

ZAGREB, Jan 8, 2000 -- (AFP) A Zagreb hospital eager to present a doctor's new-born son as Croatia's first baby of the millennium allegedly fudged records to steal the title from a lowly waitress' baby, the Jutarnji List newspaper reported here Friday.

The newspaper, citing hospital sources, said the Zagreb Merkur hospital had proclaimed the baby of the publicity-seeking doctor as "Baby 2000".

But a subsequent investigation determined that the child was in fact born on December 31 -- and that the real first arrival on January 1 was one born to a modest waitress more concerned with her baby's health than the spotlight.

The hospital sources reportedly said the hospital had deliberately faked the date of the doctor's baby because it did not want to see the title go to a child from a working-class family.
