Greece calls for YU democratic reforms

Thursday, 7 September, 2000

The Greek foreign minister, George Papandreou, who's on a visit to Belgrade, has urged Yugoslavia to embark on democratic reforms and restore ties with the European Union.

Mr Papandreou said that free and fair presidential, parliamentary and local elections later this month on September 24th would be a very important first step.

He was speaking after talks with the Yugoslav foreign minister, Zivadin Jovanovic, who said that the elections were an internal matter and no foreign interference would be tolerated.

Mr Papandreou is the most senior official of a NATO government to visit Belgrade since the alliance's bombing campaign last year over Kosovo. Greece -- a traditional ally of Serbia -- says the visit is intended to help build Balkan stability.
