New pollution spill threat to Hungary

Wednesday, 15 March, 2000

The authorities in Ukraine have warned the Hungarian government of a new pollution spill entering the Tisza river.

Hungarian radio said the spill -- the third to affect the river in a month -- was up to twenty-five kilometres long.

The nature of the spill is not yet known. The two earlier pollution leaks came from Romania, and Hungary has asked the country to identify and, if necessary, close industrial plants that pose a serious danger to the environment.
