KFOR intercepts big arms loadTuesday, 15 February, 2000
The commander of French peacekeeping forces in the ethnically-divided Kosovo town of Kosovska Mitrovica says his troops have stopped an ambulance full of arms and ammunition.
General Pierre de Saqui de Sannes said the ambulance driver tried to turn back at a French checkpoint, and overturned the vehicle into a ditch.
The driver managed to escape.
A search of the ambulance revealed ten rocket propelled grenades, nearly two-hundred hand grenades and thousands of rifle and machine gun rounds.
The general said the ambulance was travelling from the ethnic-Albanian sector of the town - the scene of recent armed violence in which the French peacekeepers were attacked by ethnic Albanians, accusing them of supporting the Serb minority.
