Germany to use Albania as transit for returning Kosovo refugeesAlbanian Economic Tribune - Jan 27, 2000
BERLIN - Interior Minister Spartak Poci signed an agreement with his German counterparts allowing Germans to use Albania as a transit country for returning Kosovo Albanian refugees.
"The Albanian government will guarantee port and airport facilities to the German authorities in case it wants to send back Kosovo Albanian refugees into Kosovo," the spokesman of the Interior Ministry told the media. "But we will not contribute in any other ways to the operation.
Germany will start in April an operation of repatriating Kosovo Albanian refugees it accepted during the NATO air strikes against Yugoslavia. It will be fully paid for by the German government.
As many as 14,698 refugees went to Germany in refugee camps, taking the lead from western countries that hosted refugees.
But officials said a large number from them have returned to the province with the end of the war in Kosovo.
