West policy to Serbia undermines stability in Balkans

HELSINKI, December 1 (Itar-Tass) - The West's policy towards the isolation of Serbia undermines stability in the Balkans, a U.N. official said.

Pekka Haavisto, head of the U.N. mission for coping with the environmental consequences of NATO's war in Yugoslavia, said in Helsinki on Wednesday that isolation of Iraq does not lead to certain political results, but on the contrary complicated the life of people.

In Helsinki Haavisto presented his book, "The Summer in the Balkans". The former leader of Greens and former minister of the environment had spent several months in the Balkans while he headed the U.N. mission.

In the book Haavisto spoke about the environmental situation in Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo after NATO's operation in Yugoslavia. The current catastrophic situation there is "the direct results of NATO's bombings", he said.

He stressed that Serbia needs international assistance in order to improve the environmental situation because it has no its own resources.
