CEOL - Meningitis scare hits Hungary

BUDAPEST, Dec 29, 1999 -- (Reuters) A series of meningitis cases in Hungary claimed their first victim on Tuesday and an army barracks was placed under quarantine, officials said.

A middle-age woman died in a Budapest hospital due to respiratory failure after being infected by the meningitis bacteria, Hungarian news agency MTI said.

The recent series of meningitis cases started with about half a dozen cases at the army barracks in Kalocsa, southern Hungary. The barracks have since been placed under full quarantine.

National health officials said the current number of cases did not constitute an outbreak.
