Displaced Kosovo Serbs in Urgent Need of Accommodation

Albanian Economic Tribune

GENEVA - There is a desperate need for accommodation for displaced Kosovars in Serbia, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees said here Friday.

Many host families can no longer afford to care for the displaced people with the onset of winter, said UNHCR spokesman Ron Redmond.

According to Belgrade, there are more than 200,000 displaced people from Kosovo in Serbia - mostly Serbs - who have joined about 500,000 previous refugees from Croatia and Bosnia.

The refugee agency is rushing winter supplies to refugees and displaced people throughout Serbia and Montenegro, it said. Ships and trucks deliver fuel and other supplies for refugees every day. A convoy arrived from Belgrade at Vranje in southern Serbia on Thursday bringing 350 beds, 700 blankets and 300 sleeping bags. (AFP)
